This tool turns readings you already have into a number you can act on, and explains what each of those readings means on its own. Fill in as much as you have. The first three sections are enough for a result; everything after them makes the answer sharper and adds specific comments on your report.
The first two are used to work out your risk. LDL and triglycerides are not part of that calculation, but they are worth entering: they often need saying something about in their own right, whatever the percentage turns out to be.
Optional, and it matters more than it sounds. With a kidney result we can use the 2024 equation, which is better calibrated and needs no ancestry adjustment at all. Without it we fall back to one from 2013.
Enter these only if your doctor has tested them. Most people will not have them, and the calculator works perfectly well without them. None of these changes the risk figure, but each is worth a comment of its own.
It gives one number: out of 100 people with your age, sex and readings, roughly how many would be expected to have a heart attack or a stroke in the next ten years. It is a statement about a group of people who resemble you, not a prediction about you. Nobody can say which of those hundred people it will be, and a low number is not a promise.
The tool picks the best equation it can run with what you have given it, and tells you which one it used. A cholesterol report alone lets it use one equation. Adding a creatinine lets it use a newer and better one. Adding a urine albumin or an HbA1c refines that further. Nothing is guessed: a blank is treated as unknown, never as zero.
These equations were built mainly on populations in the United States, and people of South Asian origin tend to develop heart disease earlier and at lower cholesterol levels than those populations. Where the older equation is used and you have said you are of South Asian ancestry, this tool raises the answer by a fifth to account for that. The adjustment is ours and is stated plainly on the result, because research has not settled on the right size for it.
