Snakebite: What To Do Nowಹಾವು ಕಚ್ಚಿದೆ: ಈಗ ಏನು ಮಾಡಬೇಕು

The first hour, in the right order. What to do, what never to do, and what to tell the hospital.

Go to a hospital now.

Every snakebite is treated as an emergency until a doctor says otherwise. Do not wait to see whether anything happens. Do not go to a traditional healer first. The treatment that saves life is only in a hospital.

This page is written for the person helping. If you were bitten yourself and you are alone, call 108 first, then follow the same steps and keep still. Answer the questions below and the page will lay out what to do, in order, and what to say when you reach the hospital.

Answering these questions is not a test for poison. This page cannot tell you whether venom went in, and neither can anybody outside a hospital. Whatever you answer, the advice ends in the same place: go now. Nothing you type is saved by the web server.

1. When did the bite happen? 1.

The last option matters. A krait bites people asleep on the floor at night. The bite can be almost painless. The first sign may be stomach pain or heavy eyelids hours later.

2. Where on the body? 2.

Most bites in India are on the leg or the foot, usually at night and usually on somebody walking barefoot.

3. What is happening now? 3.

Tick anything you can see or the person tells you. Tick nothing if there is nothing yet. Either answer is useful and neither one changes the advice to go.

4. Has anything already been done? 4.

Nobody is being blamed here. These are the things people are taught to do, and the hospital needs to know which of them were done. Tick nothing if nothing was done.

Most people who reach a hospital in time live

This is the part that is usually left out. It is the part worth holding on to while you travel. Snakebite kills tens of thousands of people in India every year. Almost all of those deaths happen to people who reached a hospital late, or never reached one. The medicine that works exists, and it is kept in government hospitals. It works better the earlier it is given.

Many snakes in India are not venomous at all, and even a venomous snake often bites without pushing venom in. That is real, and it is also the reason people take the risk of staying home. You cannot tell which kind of bite you have had, and the only safe way to find out is to be watched in a hospital.

Do not try to identify the snake

Four snakes cause most serious bites in India: the cobra, the krait, Russell's viper and the saw-scaled viper. You may have heard that you should identify the snake, or catch it, or take the dead snake to the hospital. Do not.

The doctor does not need the snake. The same medicine covers all four. The doctor decides what to give by watching the person and by a blood test, not by looking at a snake. Trying to catch it wastes the minutes that matter and gets a second person bitten. A dead snake can still bite by reflex.

If the snake was already photographed from a safe distance, you may bring the photo. The same goes if it is already dead and in a container. Never go back for it, and never delay leaving for it.

Sucking the venom out does not work

You may have seen this in the news, and you may have seen the person who did it being praised for bravery. It is worth saying plainly: it does not help the person who was bitten, and it can harm the person who does it.

Venom does not sit in a pocket under the skin waiting to be drawn out. Within seconds it has moved into the tissue and the lymph channels, where no amount of suction reaches it. This has been measured rather than argued about. When suction was tested properly, it pulled out under two per cent of the venom. Often it pulled out almost none. Two per cent does not save anybody.

The person who sucks can be poisoned as well. Doctors in India have written up two cases. One was a farmer who sucked his own cobra bite. The other was a traditional healer who had sucked the bites of three people. Both of them completely lost their sense of taste within a day, and it took between four and nine days to come back. Venom gets in through a cut in the mouth, a mouth ulcer or bleeding gums, and most people do not know they have one.

There is a third cost, and it is the one that kills. Sucking takes minutes, and it takes them at the only point where minutes are worth anything. The mouth also carries bacteria into an open wound, which is how a bite that would have healed turns into an infection.

The same applies to a suction pump or a snake stone bought for the purpose. If somebody has already sucked a bite, that person should be seen at the hospital too, and should say what they did.

If you want to be the one who saves them, drive. Getting somebody to a hospital inside the first hour does more for them than anything else a person without training can do. It also costs the rescuer nothing.

Keep the limb still, and keep it low

There is very little a person without training can do about the venom itself, and that is not anybody's failure. What there is, is worth doing properly. Keep the bitten arm or leg as still as you would keep a broken bone. Tie anything straight and firm alongside it, a stick or a rolled newspaper, so that it cannot bend. Keep it lower than the chest. Do not let the person walk. Then go.

The Indian protocol puts the position in one line: lay the person flat, with the bitten limb below the heart level. The chest is the easier landmark to find in the dark, and it is the same place. Do not prop the limb up on a pillow and do not hold it in the air, which is what everybody does with a sprain.

Lay the person on their side for the journey, whatever else you do. Not on their back. Somebody who becomes drowsy or starts vomiting on the way can choke lying face up, and a krait bite gives no warning before that happens. Stay beside them and keep checking that they are breathing.

Why this page does not teach a bandage

You may have heard of a crepe bandage wrapped over the bite and along the whole limb. This page taught it until 25 August 2026 and has taken it out. The change is said here rather than left to be noticed.

  • The national guideline keeps it for health workers. Its own words are that a crepe bandage may be applied by qualified medical personnel only. This page is written for a neighbour with a torch, and it should not hand out a technique that its own source withholds from her.
  • It has not been tested in India. The Indian protocol calls the pressure pad an idea from early research. It says the idea needs to be evaluated in the field in India, to see whether it works. That is a different thing from a method that has been shown to help.
  • It can make the limb worse. A review in the BMJ in 2022 says that pressure immobilisation is discouraged in most practice and guidelines. That is because the benefit is uncertain, and it may worsen the tissue damage around the bite. The bites that damage a limb worst are the viper bites. This page also tells you, correctly, not to try to work out which snake it was.
If a health worker offers to do it, that is a different matter. A sub-centre, a primary health centre or an ASHA worker on the way is worth a brief stop, and the decision is theirs. Nothing you tie on yourself is treatment. The treatment is in the hospital.

The bite you do not feel

The krait is the reason this page keeps saying that no symptoms is not the same as safe. It comes into houses at night, and it bites people sleeping on the floor. The bite can be so slight that the person turns over and goes back to sleep. There may be no swelling and no mark worth noticing.

Hours later the same person has stomach pain, or heavy eyelids, or cannot swallow properly. If somebody who was sleeping on the floor wakes with those things, treat it as a snakebite. Go, even with nothing to show anyone.

Where to go, and what it costs

In March 2024 the Karnataka government named its snakebite treatment centres. Each taluk hospital is one. So is each district hospital. So are certain community health centres. Snakebite here is also a notifiable disease. That means the hospital has to record it.

The same order covers cost. Primary health centres and community health centres must give the first dose of anti-snake venom free of cost. So the nearest government facility is a real place to go, not a second best. Money is not a reason to go anywhere else first.

Go to the nearest one, not the best one. A small hospital that can start treatment in twenty minutes is better than a large one two hours away. If the first place cannot treat it, they will send the person on, and the journey will already have started.

Which number to call

Call 108 for an ambulance, or 112, which reaches every emergency service. Both work across Karnataka and are free to call.

You may have seen a national snakebite helpline, 15400, mentioned in the news. It was announced in 2024 and is being tried out in five states, and Karnataka is not one of them. Do not spend an emergency finding out whether it answers. Call 108.

If a vehicle is at hand and the hospital is close, do not wait for the ambulance. Start, and call from the road.

What will happen at the hospital

Knowing this in advance makes it easier to stay, and staying is the point.

  • A simple blood test, repeated. A little blood is left standing in a glass tube for twenty minutes to see whether it clots. It needs no laboratory and it is one of the main things that tells the doctor whether venom is working. It will be repeated through the day, and a normal result early does not end the matter.
  • Watching, for at least a whole day. Somebody will check the eyelids, the breathing and the swelling every half hour or so. This is not the hospital being slow. Venom can take hours to show itself, and the watching is the treatment for that.
  • Anti-snake venom, only if it is needed. It goes into a drip. Not every person bitten needs it, and the doctor decides from the person and the blood test. If it is given, a nurse or doctor stays close by, because a few people react to it. They are ready for that, and a reaction is managed and the drip is then continued.
  • A breathing machine, sometimes. If the venom weakens the breathing muscles, a machine breathes for the person until the effect wears off. People come off it and go home. If it is offered, it is not the end of anything.
Do not take the person home early because they look fine. This is how people die after reaching help. The doctor decides when it is safe to leave, and the reason for waiting is that the danger arrives late.

Keeping snakes away from the house

Bites go up sharply in the monsoon, when water pushes snakes out of their holes and towards houses. Most of what works costs nothing.

  • Sleep on a cot, not on the floor. This one change prevents more krait bites than anything else on this list.
  • Tuck a mosquito net in on all sides. It was meant for mosquitoes and it keeps snakes off a sleeping person as well.
  • Carry a torch after dark and wear closed footwear, in the yard as much as in the field. Most bites are on a bare foot that did not see what it stepped near.
  • Move the woodpile, the rubble and the grain sacks away from the wall of the house, and cut the grass close. Snakes come for the rats, and the rats come for the grain.
  • Close the gaps under doors and around drains and pipes, and keep the house doors shut at night.
  • Never put a bare hand into a hole, a sack, a woodpile or a gap you cannot see into. Use a stick.
  • Leave a snake alone if you see one. Most bites of the hand happen to somebody who was trying to kill or move a snake. Move people away and call for someone who does this properly.

What this page does not do

  • It does not tell you whether venom went in. Nothing outside a hospital can.
  • It does not name a medicine or a dose, and it never will. Anti-snake venom is given by a doctor, into a vein, with the means to handle a reaction standing by.
  • It does not identify snakes, and it asks you not to try. The treatment does not depend on it.
  • It does not cover bites by a scorpion, a centipede, a spider or a dog. A dog bite or a monkey bite needs a different page. It also needs a rabies injection course, and needs it today.
